Eating carefully. Staying active. And still not getting there. If that sounds familiar, the issue may not be effort — it may be biology.
DR+ GPs assess what’s actually driving the difficulty and build a programme around it — so the work you’re putting in has a real foundation to build on.
A GP weight management clinic in Singapore provides medically supervised programmes that go beyond generic diet advice. A GP assesses your metabolism, hormonal profile and underlying health. From there, they recommend an individualised plan — nutrition guidance, lifestyle support and medical options where appropriate — with ongoing care throughout.
If you’ve been eating carefully, staying active and still not seeing the change you want — your body may be responding to something beyond your control. This is more common than most people realise, and it’s not about discipline.
When your body senses a calorie reduction, it increases hunger hormones and slows your metabolic rate — a survival mechanism called metabolic adaptation. The harder you restrict, the stronger this response becomes. Your body is protecting itself the way it was designed to.
Conditions such as insulin resistance, thyroid dysfunction and PCOS actively work against weight loss. Eating well and exercising cannot overcome them without first identifying and addressing the cause. Without identifying these factors, no programme — however disciplined — will produce results that last.
A GP assessment finds what’s actually driving the resistance. From there, your programme is built around your specific biology — not a generic plan designed for someone else.
Generic programmes — whether diet plans, apps or meal replacements — take the same approach for everyone. A GP programme starts with what is specific to you: your blood markers, your hormonal profile, your metabolic baseline. That difference matters enormously to your results.
Insulin resistance, thyroid dysfunction and PCOS are frequently unidentified. A GP blood panel screens for these at your first visit — and addresses them as part of your programme, instead of letting them silently undermine your results.
Your GP reviews your blood markers and progress at every visit and adjusts the programme accordingly. Results are tracked beyond the scale — glucose, lipids, waist circumference — so the approach evolves with you.
Quick-fix approaches often work short term. A medically supervised programme is built for results that hold — with a maintenance plan discussed from your first appointment, not improvised when progress stalls.
Nutrition guidance, activity recommendations and between-visit WhatsApp support are part of every DR+ programme. You’re not handed a pamphlet and left to figure it out.
A DR+ GP assessment takes under an hour and gives you a clear picture of where to start.
Finding out what’s actually going on
Your GP reviews your medical history and establishes your metabolic baseline. Blood tests screen for hormonal or metabolic factors that may be working against you. You leave knowing what is driving the difficulty — and what your programme will address.
Starting at a pace that works
Nutrition and activity guidance begins. Where clinically appropriate, prescription treatment options — which may include GLP-1 receptor agonists for eligible patients — are introduced at the lowest suitable dose and explained clearly. Your GP walks you through what to expect before you leave.
Tracking the progress the scale doesn’t show
Monthly reviews cover blood markers, waist circumference and blood pressure — not just weight. Your plan is adjusted based on how your body is responding. WhatsApp support is available between visits.
Building results that hold
Health markers are reviewed against your starting baseline. A long-term maintenance plan is confirmed — because the goal isn’t just to reach a number. It’s to stay there.
Medically supervised weight management is different from slimming programmes, apps or meal replacements. It starts with understanding your biology — then builds around it.
Hormonal imbalances, insulin resistance and thyroid dysfunction are common and frequently unidentified. A GP finds these. A slimming programme doesn’t look for them.
The same GP reviews your markers, adjusts your plan and monitors your progress at every visit. This continuity matters — both for results and for catching anything that needs attention along the way.
DR+ is Healthier SG enrolled. Patients access subsidised health screenings that overlap with weight management monitoring. CHAS-eligible patients may claim consultation fees.
Most online calculators use Western BMI thresholds. For Asian populations in Singapore, the healthy range is narrower — the overweight threshold starts at BMI 23, not 25. Waist circumference matters equally, reflecting fat distribution that BMI alone doesn’t capture.
Visceral fat around the abdomen is a strong predictor of metabolic risk, independent of total body weight.
A high waist measurement alongside a borderline BMI is a signal worth acting on.
Managing your weight well does more than change how you look. The health benefits are significant — and for many patients, they arrive before the scale reflects the full picture.
Improved insulin sensitivity means more stable blood glucose — and the steadier energy levels that come with it. Less crashing in the afternoon. Less reaching for quick fixes.
Reduced visceral fat and improved metabolic health contribute to better sleep quality. Better sleep in turn supports better appetite regulation — a positive cycle that makes progress easier to sustain.
Reduced load on the knees, hips and lower back improves comfort and makes it easier to stay active — which in turn supports your results over time.
Lower risk of type 2 diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease. Your GP tracks these markers at every visit — so you can see the progress in your numbers, not just in the mirror.
Stable blood glucose and improved sleep quality both contribute to sharper focus and more consistent energy across the day. Many patients report improved mood and reduced mental fatigue as some of the earliest changes they notice.
Weight management that accounts for muscle preservation — through adequate protein and activity guidance — changes how your body looks and feels, not just what the scale reads. Reduced visceral fat also tends to improve skin tone and texture over time.
Yes. Licensed GPs in Singapore can prescribe weight management medications, including HSA-approved prescription-only medicines, after a clinical assessment confirms eligibility. DR+ GPs conduct a comprehensive medical review before recommending any prescription treatment, to ensure it is appropriate for your individual health profile and medical history.
In Singapore, a BMI of 23 or above is considered overweight for Asian populations, and 27.5 or above signals elevated metabolic risk, including higher likelihood of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. These thresholds are lower than the Western standard of 25 and 30 respectively. Your DR+ GP will explain how your BMI relates to your personal health risk.
No. Many patients manage their weight through nutrition guidance, physical activity planning and behavioural support alone. Medical or prescription options are only considered for patients who meet specific clinical criteria, and are discussed as one part of a broader plan, never a requirement.
Your DR+ GP will guide you through a maintenance plan to help sustain your results, which may include continued lifestyle coaching, periodic reviews, and, where medication was used, a gradual tapering plan. Obesity is treated as a chronic condition, so ongoing follow-up matters even after your goal is reached.
Consultations at DR+ may be claimable under CHAS for eligible patients. Healthier SG-enrolled patients can access subsidised health screenings that monitor key markers relevant to weight management, including fasting glucose and lipid profiles. Medication costs are generally out-of-pocket and not covered by Medisave.
No referral is needed. Walk-ins are welcome at all 12 DR+ clinics during operating hours. You can also book an appointment via our website or WhatsApp. Last registration is 15 minutes before closing time.
Yes. Hormonal imbalances — including thyroid dysfunction, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), insulin resistance and cortisol dysregulation — can cause weight gain or make it significantly harder to lose weight, even with consistent diet and exercise. A GP blood panel can screen for these conditions as part of your initial assessment at DR+. Where a hormonal cause is identified, it is managed alongside your weight programme.
