Peripheral nerve blocks involve injecting local anaesthetic and anti-inflammatory near specific nerves to interrupt pain signals. It is used to alleviate various types of chronic pain, including neuropathic pain and nerve-related pain from injuries. By targeting nerves responsible for transmitting pain, peripheral nerve blocks can offer relief by temporarily disrupting pain signals traveling from the affected area to the brain.
Nerve blocks are often also used to identify the source of pain. Once the specific nerves contributing to the pain are pinpointed, the injections can be utilised as a therapeutic tool.
If you're experiencing pain originating from a joint or peripheral nerve, a nerve block injection could be beneficial. Typically suggested for individuals not responsive to other conservative treatments like oral anti-inflammatory medication, rest, or physical therapy.
The injection is administered to deliver medication as close to the nerve causing pain as possible. By doing so, it effectively “shuts down” the pain receptors within the affected nerve(s). The immediate effects of the injection provide rapid pain relief, with the medication taking effect shortly after administration.
