Why protect against shingles

Shingles is caused by reactivation of the chickenpox virus in people who have had chickenpox before. It usually appears as a painful, blistering rash on one side of the body or face and can last several weeks.
Most people recover, but the pain and discomfort can affect sleep, daily activities and quality of life. The risk of shingles and its complications increases with age and in people with weakened immune systems.

What are possible complications of shingles?

Prolonged nerve pain
Burning or stabbing pain at the rash area that can last for months after the skin has healed.

Skin infection
Blisters can become infected, causing more redness, swelling and slower healing.

Eye problems
If the eye area is affected, it may cause eye pain, redness or blurred vision.

Skin scarring
Some people are left with marks or changes in the skin where the rash was.

How Vaccination Helps

Vaccination helps reduce:
• The chance of developing shingles
• The severity and duration of symptoms
• Complications such as long-lasting nerve pain
By staying protected early, you safeguard your quality of life, keeping you active, independent, and comfortable.

Shingles Vaccination under National Adult Immunisation Schedule (NAIS)

From 1 September 2025, eligible Singapore citizens and Permanent Residents can receive up to 75% government subsidies for the shingles vaccine at CHAS-accredited GP clinics. In line with MOH recommendations, shingles vaccination under NAIS is generally recommended for:

•Adults 60 years and above

•Adults 18 years and older with certain conditions that weaken the immune system

Your DR+ doctor will confirm if you are in a recommended group and whether the vaccine is suitable for you before vaccination.

The shingles vaccine under NAIS is given as a 2-dose schedule, typically administered 2 to 6 months apart.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does shingles vaccination benefit me?

Vaccination helps reduce your chance of developing shingles, makes it milder and shorter if you do get it, and lowers the risk of complications such as long-lasting nerve pain.

Are There Side Effects After Shingles Vaccination?

Most side effects are mild and short term, such as arm soreness, fatigue, headache, muscle aches, or mild fever. These usually settle within a few days. Serious reactions are rare.

Is shingles vaccination under NAIS safe?

Yes. The shingles vaccine under Singapore’s NAIS is safe. It is a non live vaccine that has been carefully reviewed and approved for use, with side effects usually mild and temporary.

When do you need the shingles vaccine?

You generally need the shingles vaccine if you are:

• 50 years and above, even if you had chickenpox before
• 60 years and above, as the risk and complications increase with age
• Adults with weaker immune systems due to medical conditions or long term treatments, based on doctor’s advice

Vaccination helps reduce the risk of shingles and long lasting nerve pain. A doctor can advise on the right timing for your situation.

I am already planning to get vaccinated. What will happen at the visit?

At the visit, the doctor will review your medical history, explain the vaccine, and give the injection in your upper arm. You may be observed briefly afterward, then you can go home the same day.
